Why do people have different colored eyes?

Some people have blue eyes, some brown and others grey.
Why is that happening?

The color of the eyes is determined only by parents or is something more complicated?

Many people incorrectly believe that the color of the eye depends only on one gene. The truth is, that it's even more complicated, because the eye color is a polygenic trait. The color of each person's eyes depends on the melanin in his iris of the eye. Blue eyes are due to lack of melanin unline dark brown eyes which have a large enough quantity. That's why usually people with fair skin (no melanin) have pale eyes and people with dark skin have excess melanin and more often dark eyes too. The lack of melanin also explains why babies when they're born with light eyes (usually blue) then darken. This is because they start and produce melanin and thus the eye color deepens.
